The first program launched under the auspices of the Thought Leadership institute in April 2016, and supported by Elsevier, focused on the growing interface of medicine and artificial intelligence—specifically “smart” machines.
The Professional Intelligence program brought together thought leaders from diverse backgrounds and laid the groundwork for building consensus and pathways to develop and leverage the interface between artificially intelligent machines and humans in healthcare to improve 21st century health and well-being. The resultant report, Medicine and Machines: The coming transformation of healthcare, offers a synthesis and interpretation of this critically important topic. The article addresses the looming convergence of technology, data, and artificial intelligence in the field of medicine and strongly suggests that academic health center leaders view this major change in healthcare as an opportunity toward responsive reform. Additional sessions have followed, and more are planned, as the Institute convenes thought leaders on the challenges facing healthcare providers in an increasingly technological era of healthcare delivery and data development.
