THE IMPORTANCE OF LEADERSHIP
As academic health centers face increasingly complex challenges, the need for effective leadership becomes paramount.
The skills needed for leadership go beyond success in academe to include a variety of other important factors, such as emotional intelligence. Further, the search processes to find these leaders need improvement and streamlining.
There perhaps has been nothing more valuable to me than the more than 100 visits I have made to academic health centers in the U.S. and around the world. These visits allowed me, at least temporarily, to be on the front line and enabled me to gain a deep perspective on active issues, challenges and concerns. They also served the important purpose of establishing personal relationships with academic health center leaders and their senior management teams.
