A confluence of economic and technological advances, coupled with pressing worldwide health needs, presents a convincing case for a new paradigm of the academic health center. From the AAHC President
Recently I was in Singapore, seeing first-hand how the island-nation is moving rapidly towards the development of multinational academic health centers, while dramatically increasing its share of the knowledge economy. The overarching theme of my visit was clear: Singapore seeks to mobilize the power gained by effective integration of the various components of the academic health center enterprise. It is very noticeable that Singapore has had and continues to have great success in recruiting international talent in science, education, and clinical care.
Today I am convinced more than ever of the importance of reorienting and restructuring academic health centers into multinational institutions as well as the need to bring them together to point the way towards positive change around the world. The AAHC plans to be active in this process as the world gets flatter and knowledge increasingly becomes the international currency.
