Training the 21st Century Healthcare Workforce

Future Trends, New Skillsets

The loss of critically important thought leadership resulting from the delayed launch of the National Health Care Workforce Commission is compounded with each passing year. There is a growing mismatch between health professions supply and demand, and between the skillsets health professions students possess at graduation and what they need to succeed in their careers. The trends impacting this mismatch include (but are not limited to):

  • Emergent paradigms for healthcare delivery, such as team-based care and patient and family-centered care
  • New entrants into the healthcare marketplace, such as retail clinics
  • Greater emphasis and responsibility for management of chronic conditions and population health
  • Rapidly evolving healthcare technologies that may significantly alter the traditional role of some health professions and increase/decrease the demand for others
